I don’t normally recommend people for this “Follow Friday” thing on Twitter; partly because nobody cares what I think, and partly because of the astonishing amount of people posting stuff like this:
I’m sure the above recommendations from complete strangers are worthy and life-affirming, but just the slightest of clues as to what I’m letting myself in for by following these people would be nice. I know I could click on them and check their timelines, but you’re the one recommending them, I don’t want to have to do any research. I’m very, very lazy, for Christ’s sake.
A few people that I follow have questioned the validity of included hashtags in posts before (Our beloved One a Day organizer Pete being the only one I can think of now), but apart from recognizing it – and subsequently skipping past it – the #ff tag is truly pointless. Here’s what happened after 15 seconds of searching for ‘#ff’ in Echofon (Hint: it’s the number in the top right corner):
Insane. And that was just 15 seconds, a minute or so later:
That said, there are people that I follow that I’d like to share with the world*, so it’s a great idea in theory, but it just doesn’t really work if you do either of the things I’ve shown above, at least with me anyway – I follow 145 people at the time of writing this and I find it overwhelming at times, so if I’m following anyone new, I usually need a good reason. Or an assistant.
So please, the next time you’re planning on doing a ‘Follow Friday’, hire me an assistant.
